Getting great images of birds in flight is such a challenge for me. I almost got some great shots today if not for a few imperfections in my settings and framing. Lessons learned.
I hiked up a canyon to look for bighorn, birds of prey and really anything else as usual. After spending a while up at the rim I put on my backpack and just then a pair of crows flew overhead. One crow flew up to within ~15 feet and repeated the process 3-4 times before rejoining its partner in the sky. I had my shutter speed set too low and was entirely consumed with trying to keep focus on the bird while attempting to frame the image. Faster shutter speed would have made these ultra-sharp (potentially). It was really interesting to me that the crow flew so directly at me in that way. I hope it happens more often! Great opportunity to get some cool shots and lessons learned for next time.
There were lots of other birds, but nothing besides the crow was close enough for interesting photos. One perigrine flew about 40 feet away from me, but as the fastest animal on the planet -- it was moving far too fast through the forest and rocks for me to stand a chance in the 2 seconds that I saw it. Super fun to see so many birds!
