Four more moose today on my travels, bringing my 2023 total to 99 moose. On the way to my hike, I spotted two bulls in the distance. The smaller male looked like Maverick from a distance, but they were too far away for me to get a solid visual. I continued on to Brainard Lake State Park and hiked up to and around Long Lake.After only seeing birds and squirrels all day, I resigned myself to not having any notable encounters. About a mile before getting back from the ten mile adventure, I decided to take a short detour. When the campground isn't in use, I've seen moose in the open meadow from time to time. Again today there were two moose and it turned into about an hour-long encounter. Unsure at first, the calf was the first to walk my direction. Mom eventually followed, but largely watched from a distance. At their closest, the pair was around 25 feet away after starting nearly 200 feet away. The shadows and bright snow with bright background light made for tough photos, but it was another great encounter.
