Wow, this was a personal record for the number of moose to see in such a short time. A combination of great luck and good timing, it seemed like every half mile I was in the midst of a different group. In total, I photographed 14 different moose -- and saw at least one more (but didn't get a pic). Several really unique situations emerged over the course of these two short hikes in under 20 hours. Most of the moose were mothers and their calves, but there were several young females with young bulls. In one situation, a young male was bedded down in the snow and in the blink of an eye, a young female ran up and forced him to get up. The two of them walked off into the forest, but they both seemed so young that I wouldn't have expected them to be mature enough to mate yet. In another encounter, I found myself ~8 feet away from a young female that I would have expected to also be with her mother (see image "Orphan sister"). This may be the closest I've ever been to a moose. Strangely, she was with a very young bull and I got the impression that they were both having their first season away from their mothers. I stayed with them for a few minutes, but I could tell they were a little nervous so I didn't stick around long.
