I took another trip down to Gila Wilderness in southern New Mexico in hopes of finding Mexican Wolves, but it appears that I narrowly missed them again. I've yet to post many pics or a proper journal entry from the first trip a few months ago, but this one was very similar. Beautiful views, lots of great birds, a handful of larger mammals and, unfortunately, no wolves. On this trip, I had two reasonably close calls, one that was maybe only 30-minutes from when a pair of wolves came through. Animals in this area are extremely skittish, and I get the feeling that hunting and poaching are so common that all the critters see humans as a great threat. All that aside, I love the remoteness, the big views and the chance of amazing backdrops with wildlife. No pictures from this trip really stand out to me, but the roadrunner I saw as I was leaving turned out to be my sharpest of the bunch. The pronghorn would have been great, but atmospheric disturbance (heat waves) is a major issue in terms of clarity (even in cold temps). Next time I go back, I'm going to get serious about my camo, get serious about being more patient and also search some new areas.
