Traveling north from New Mexico, Arizona and eastern Utah, I couldn't resist another trip to Colorado National Monument. I've had great luck with the bighorn sheep there in the past, and it's a good time to potentially find newborn lambs. On this particular late-afternoon hike, I went out to scout a canyon that is one of the favorite places for bighorn. Several ewes were grazing near the trail and I noticed a group of at least 22 far off in the distance. Among that group were at least six newborn lambs! That was exactly what I wanted to find, but they were too high up and far away for me to reach them on this day. I watched their movements and decided that I would try to find them the next day. In the meantime, I watched the ewes closest to me and I was shocked to watch a baby kicking inside one of the very pregnant females. I took a video of it, and will have to circle back and post it here in (hopefully) short order. While I was photo'ing the ewes, a nice little white-tailed antelope squirrel was kind enough to pose in the light right next to me. It would take me two days to find the lambs (pictures in a separate journal entry), but this was a great start to this return trip to the area.
